The astronomical observatory at Mt Stromlo in Canberra was destroyed by fire, on Saturday 18th January 2003. The media release is at http://www.anu.edu.au/fires/media.php
Many of you are interested in astronomy or in science in general. Many of you who I've talked to are as upset about this as I am. So I thought I'd let you know about it.
US chix: you can donate through the Charities Aid Fund of America, or through the American Astronomical Society at http://www.aas.org/policy/stromlo.html.
CAFA is a IRS section 501c(3) organisation and your donation will be eligible to be claimed under the US tax code. ANU has been accepted as an approved organisation by CAFA. (If anyone can give me the URL for CAFA, I'll post it here.)
If you donate through CAFA, please tell them it's for the Australian National University in Canberra, Australia; and that it's for the redevelopment of the Mt Stromlo Observatory. ANU would also like to be told you donated, they're heartened by the support they've been receiving from all over the world.
If you are in a position to give to charities, please consider including the rebuilding of Mt Stromlo as one of your charities this year. In the last interview I saw, they weren't sure whether they would be able to rebuild all four telescopes.
(And yes, I'm reporting this here because I care about the sciences, and this is a major blow to Southern-Sky astronomy. And I live in Australia.)
