Follow along as I to try to express my gratitude and share a little about each of these women in hopes that you too can understand, appreciate, and come to admire these women and why I consider these women my mentors In, Near, and Around Ubuntu.

Akkana Peck (akk) - I had the opportunity to meet Akkana at OSCON last year though we had talked/chatted in IRC prior to that. Akkana is an excellent public speaker and funny as heck too! Anyone who can make me laugh and understand GRUB a little more in under 5 minutes is awesome in my book. (side note - Her mom is cool too!!!)

Elizabeth is a longtime Linuxchix member, and is the first-ever women elected to the Ubuntu Community Council. Congratulations, Elizabeth!

Carla Schroder says she just kind of wandered into her current life as a free software advocate and well-known IT journalist. I don't have much in the way of formal education. But I've always been mechanically inclined - your classic ripping things apart and figuring out how they work. I think that makes open source a natural fit for me.

Schroder didn't study computers or programming in school...

BANGALORE: With a name like LinuxChix-India, you might think its mission is trivial, but their goal is serious: creating equal access for women to enter the world of technology.

Archana Raghupathy of Chennai started LinuxChix-India in 2005. It is the Indian chapter of the global women techies' network Linuxchix.org, and tries to empower Indian women to use, develop and contribute to the world of free and open source software (FOSS).

Your faithful one-third of the TresChix, Carla Schroder (that's me!) just got a very cool, fairly high-profile job as the managing editor of Linux Today and LinuxPlanet. w00t!

Carla is an experienced System Administrator and a good technical writer. She was one of the early Linuxchix, and has spent years mentoring and otherwise helping new and experienced Linux folk through their assorted dilemmas. The result is a friendly and direct, information-packed and ego-free writing style. Unlike the typical how-to that provides a list of steps that have worked for the author, Carla's discussions fill in the blanks and tell you why she takes the steps that she does.
